Lazarus

My final term project at Yoobee Film College, a kickboxing film about a man who dies in the ring, to come back a year later and fight his killer once again.

Creating, Directing, Writing, Cinematography, and Editing

A year after dying in the ring and being resuscitated, fighter Lazarus Perry re-enters the ring for a rematch with the man who took his life.

This project was quite hard to do. At Yoobee, we knew the whole year that Term 4 was 10 weeks of a single project, done in pairs. At the start of course, I was outspoken about wanting to be solo, but as I got to know the people around me, especially Jude and Lucas (although I have known Lucas for years), I wanted to do the project with one of them. When Term 4 came around, I was put by myself due to a situation with a class member, and although Jude and I had picked each other for the project, we did not get the wish. Although this bothered us, I was determined to get on with my project, until one problem revealed itself - a massive creative block.

I had been wondering what I was going to do for so long, that when the time came, I couldn't actually think. We were only given a week to come up with and solidify our idea, and on the Friday before pitching I gave my teacher an idea I had experimented with, and he told me I had to go back to square one. From then, I sat down and remembered that I had wanted to create a fighting movie for a long time, and that my Uncle Eugene owns a gym and runs kickboxing / muay thai. So, I started writing, and my pitch for Lazarus was accepted.

We only had two weeks to do pre-production, which was writing, storyboarding, shot lists, health and safety, location scouting, actor scouting, casting, all of which I had to do alone without any help whatsoever. The only help I got was from Uncle Eugene, who allowed me to come into his gym and do all of this, he helped me pick the fighters for the movie, acted in it - big props to him and the Oliver MMA gym once again.

After all of that, we got filming done with the production team I was assigned, which included Lucas and Jude which was good. We shot the whole fight scene, and the flashback fight scene, in five hours, due to our lead (Cullen) having to leave by 3. I had to direct the actors, the small crowd, all three cameras (one of which I was operating whilst doing this), all in five hours.

Editing came along, and I was able to get it done quite well. Although, sound design is not my best skill, so sound is a bit off and obviously there's a lot that's not perfect - but all things considered, I think everything went very well.
